Veterans for American Ideals (VFAI) is a national project of Human Rights First, bringing together veterans, family members and allies who continue their service through civic engagement and advocacy—championing democratic values and standing with those who have stood beside us. VFAI members believe service to country doesn’t end when the uniform comes off; it continues through action and the defense of human rights at home and abroad. We understand that the fundamentals of the American ideals we hold dear—liberty, equality, accountability, and democracy—are worth protecting long after military service ends. Veterans know democracy is strongest when people participate, leaders are held accountable, and everyone is treated with dignity and respect. VFAI unites our member’s voices to confront today’s most urgent challenges. Through education, advocacy, and coalition building, we empower veterans and our allies to take action—meeting with lawmakers, mobilizing communities, and carrying forward the moral duty of service to ensure America lives up to the ideals that define its promise; liberty and justice for all.

Liberty and Equality
We believe liberty and equality are the foundation of a just nation. Veterans understand that freedom must be protected and shared equitably among all people. Through public advocacy and community leadership, we work to ensure every person enjoys the same rights, safety, and dignity that define America at its best.
Accountability and Democracy
Accountability keeps democracy strong. We hold leaders and institutions responsible to the people they serve and to the principles of our Constitution. Through civic engagement, veteran-led advocacy, and democratic participation, we reinforce faith in democratic values and protect against political extremism and anti-democratic threats.

We empower veterans to use their voices and experience to create opportunity: for Afghan allies seeking refuge, for immigrants finding belonging, and for communities striving toward fairness and inclusion.
