Human Rights First on Jan. 6 commission vote
WASHINGTON — Chris Purdy, Project Manager of the Veterans for American Ideals program at Human Rights First gave the following statement in reaction to the U.S. Senate blocking a commission to investigate the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
“The failure of some of our elected Congressional leaders to take seriously the national threat exposed on January 6 will have serious consequences. Investigating the political violence and attempted disruption of the democratic process should be an American issue, not a partisan one.”
Human Rights First supported the creation of the commission but called for greater mechanisms for accountability for perpetrators of the attack on the Capitol.
