Veterans working to safeguard democracy on election day

WASHINGTON – Human Rights First is proud to announce a partnership between Veterans for American Ideals (VFAI) and Power the Polls to protect and preserve the 2020 electoral process. Through this initiative, “Vets Power the Polls,” VFAI will mobilize veterans to serve as volunteer poll workers this November. Focusing on four critical states, Michigan, Iowa, Georgia, and Wisconsin, VFAI aims to secure 1,000 volunteers to serve on Election Day.

VFAI was founded on a simple principle – that service doesn’t stop after we take off our uniforms. VFAI believes that veterans are uniquely trained to step up and lead, especially during times of crisis. As COVID-19 continues to impact the health and wellness of American communities, experts expect a critical shortfall in election workers this fall. The pandemic induced volunteer shortage combined with a highly-contested presidential race could lead to potentially catastrophic election day outcomes – long lines, delayed access, and fewer polling places.

By mobilizing veterans, eager and ready to serve, VFAI aims to help ensure a smooth, secure, and trusted electoral process – the cornerstone of democracy.

Veterans are encouraged to sign up at powerthepolls.vfai.org.
