Statement of Elisa Massimino on the Passing of John Payton

Washington, DC – Human Rights First President and CEO Elisa Massimino today issued the following statement celebrating the life and legacy of John Payton: “For decades, John Payton used his eloquence, intelligence and grace to bring each of us closer to a society centered on the inherent dignity of all people. From America’s highest court to the election booths of South Africa, John was an unparalleled champion for equality and human rights. He brought out the best in those with whom he worked and inspired countless others to join him in the fight for fairness. During this difficult time, our thoughts are with his wife, Gay McDougall, his family and his many colleagues and friends. We hope they find comfort in knowing that his legacy will shape the law and our lives for generations to come.”
