Congress Must Not Fund Brutality and Lawlessness

Washington, DC. — As Congress votes today on spending bills, Human Rights First’s Senior Director of Refugee Advocacy, Robyn Barnard, issued the following statement:

“Congress has to decide whether it will fund lawlessness or instead step into its proper role as a check on executive branch overreach. The ‘power of the purse’ means nothing if Congress is content to issue blank checks to the Trump administration. Today, members should vote against funding the brutalization of refugees and asylum seekers and reject funding that would separate families and line the pockets of private prison companies.”
