Human Rights First Slams Passage of Rescissions Package
Washington DC —In response to the House’s narrow 216-213 vote to pass the Senate-amended rescissions package—which claws back $9 billion in Congressionally-appropriated FY24 and FY25 funds, including $7.9 billion in foreign assistance—Human Rights First President and CEO Uzra Zeya issued the following statement:
“The cruel rescissions package that President Trump signed into law today repudiates U.S. human rights and humanitarian leadership and will fuel global turmoil, suffering and repression that makes Americans less safe, secure, and prosperous. By zeroing out U.S. government support for courageous human rights defenders across the globe and eviscerating life-saving programs for vulnerable children threatened by hunger and armed conflict and tens of millions of refugees worldwide, the U.S. administration is giving dictators a pass and throwing the most vulnerable under the bus. The consequences for everyday Americans are more global instability, forced displacement, oppression and conflicts that make us less safe at home and less respected across the world.”
