Human Rights First Responds to Too-close-to-call Exit Polls in Polish Presidential Election: “migrants and people seeking asylum look to be the clear losers”

In response to the too-close-to call exit polls in the Polish presidential election, our senior advisor Brian Dooley, author of Human Rights First’s new report on the situation at the Belarus border, issued the following statement:

“Whichever candidate eventually wins, migrants and people seeking asylum look to be the clear losers. A deeply anti-immigrant rhetoric has been normalized in Polish politics, and this election has contributed to a toxic climate of xenophobia at the EU’s eastern border. Moral and legal protections once afforded to asylum seekers have been eroded, and the candidates failed to speak up to protect people fleeing war and persecution, or those who work to help them.”
