Human Rights First Blasts White House Effort to Intimidate Lawyers

Washington, D.C.–In response to the White House memo, “Preventing Abuses of the Legal System and the Federal Courts,” Human Rights First President and CEO Sue Hendrickson issued the following statement.

“Due process and legal representation are critical both to protect people and their human rights and to maintain a fair and respected system of justice. In asylum and immigration cases, people’s lives, safety and family unity are at stake. Legal representation is essential to accurate and just adjudications and upholding the rule of law. Attempts to pressure or intimidate attorneys into not representing people in legal proceedings are a notorious page out of the authoritarian playbook.”
