Human Rights First Awarded Funding From Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund

Houston, TX-– Human Rights First today announced that it has received a grant from the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The funding will allow Human Rights First to provide case management services to connect Houston area asylum seekers with vital social services including accessing safe and stable housing, financial stability, education, and employment as they pursue their asylum claims.

Hurricane Harvey destroyed homes, communities, and livelihoods. Among those hit the hardest are the Houston refugees served by Human Rights First: men, women, and children who fled violence and trauma in their home countries, living in the United States with few resources and isolated from family and friends back home.

“In the aftermath of the hurricane, our refugee clients are in need of legal and social services to help them rebuild their lives. We are grateful for the funding we have received from the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund that will help us continue to fill these needs in the weeks and months ahead,” said Human Rights First’s Hardy Vieux.

The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund was established to provide support and relief to those impacted by Hurricane Harvey in the Harris County and Houston area. The fund was founded by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and County Judge Ed Emmett and is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation. Because of the immense need in and around Houston, this fund is dedicated to filling the gaps that are not currently being met by other local and federal efforts on an immediate and longer-term basis.
