Washington, D.C.—In response to reports that Retired Marine General James Mattis has been chosen to serve as the next secretary of defense under the Trump Administration, Human Rights First’s Raha Wala has issued the following statement:
“We look forward to working with Gen. Mattis and his staff to advance American ideals and uphold the bipartisan consensus against torture. Military leaders, experienced interrogators, intelligence professionals, and members of Congress from both sides of the aisle agree that torture is illegal, immoral, and counterproductive. We welcomed reports that Gen. Mattis advised against torture, and we urge him to continue to stand up against it.”
