Washington, D.C.—In response to a letter sent by CIA Director Nominee Gina Haspel to Senate intelligence committee vice chair Senator Mark Warner, General Charles C. Krulak, former commandant of the Marine Corps, issued the following statement:
“Ms. Haspel is cynically trying to offer mere words in an attempt to win votes to support her confirmation. Action, not words, matter. Judgement is what matters. Character is what matters. The definition of moral courage is doing the right thing at the right time for the right reasons, when no one’s looking. Gina Haspel failed that test. Senators should stand with John McCain, Admiral Mullen, and other military leaders and hold Gina Haspel responsible for her record. Ms. Haspel should not be confirmed.”
General Krulak led an effort of 109 of the nation’s most respected retired generals and admirals who wrote a letter to senators expressing profound concern over Haspel’s nomination.
