Letter to Attorney General Eric Holder on Military Commissions Trial

Human Rights First sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder urging him to reject reported proposals to transfer a Russian national detained in Afghanistan to the United States for trial in a military commission. The letter comes following a Washington Post article on the administration’s consideration of this move.

Human Rights First notes that federal courts have completed nearly 500 cases related to international terrorism since 9/11.  Of those, 67 cases have involved individuals captured overseas, according to Department of Justice data obtained by Human Rights First in a Freedom of Information Act request.
