Human Rights First to Brief United Nations Human Rights Committee

WHAT: Human Rights First’s international legal director, Gabor Rona, will be in Geneva this week ahead of U.S. testimony before the Human Rights Committee, a body of international legal experts established by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, a treaty the United States ratified in 1992. Rona will also brief the Committee.

DETAILS: HRF submitted a report to the Committee urging it to focus on U.S. compliance with the treaty’s prohibitions against arbitrary detention and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment. HRF also asked the Committee to question the U.S. delegation about accountability measures relating to abuses committed by U.S. personnel and the means available for detainees to challenge the basis of their detention.
