Pro Bono Training: Petitions for Review in Immigration Cases
Date: Thursday, April 9th
Time: 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM ET
Panelists: Warren Craig, Managing Attorney, Human Rights First; Sam Hsieh, Deputy Program Director, Amica Center for Immigrant Rights
In this training, attorneys from the Human Rights First’s Refugee Representation team and Amica Center for Immigrant Rights will provide an introduction to petitions for review, which are appeals filed to the federal circuit courts following a final order of removal. As pretermissions of asylum cases and dismissals of BIA appeals ramp up, it is important for practitioners to be familiar with the procedures for filing and litigating petitions for review. This training will cover the procedures for the initial filing of a petition for review, seeking stays of removal before the circuit court, the format and structure of appellate briefs, the standard of review that circuit courts use when considering immigration cases, what to expect at oral arguments, as well as the status of related BIA rules on filing and processing appeals.
