U.S. Immigration Detention

What's Going On

The U.S. government continues to lock up migrants and people seeking asylum in jails and other immigration detention centers violating their rights to liberty and protection from arbitrary detention, often exacerbating the trauma asylum seekers face, and impeding access to legal counsel.

What We're Doing

We press the U.S. government to end this harmful policy and permit individuals to pursue their claims in the community. Where additional support is determined necessary to ensure an individual's compliance with immigration proceedings, we urge the government to use community-based case support programs, which are also more cost-effective than detention and much less harmful.
