Visionary Award

The inaugural Visionary Award recognizes champions who put human rights first in their own remarkable career trajectories with outsize impact. Richard Gere’s lifetime advocacy for the human rights of Tibetans has shaped U.S. and international policy responses by speaking truth to power and leveraging artistic achievement as a human rights force multiplier. As Chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet and co-founder of Tibet House US, he has shined a light on the repression of millions of Tibetans and advanced preservation of Tibetan culture in defiance of Chinese Communist Party efforts to co-opt it. He also has been at the forefront of the global fight against HIV/AIDS for decades and supported the rights of indigenous persons, vulnerable refugees, homeless, and humanitarian crisis response through the Gere Foundation he founded in 1991.
