An
original Court TV movie and a new
Human Rights First report illustrate the
plight of asylum seekers who fall victim to unfair U.S. detention practices.
Chasing Freedom On January
19, 2004 Chasing Freedom, an original movie inspired by an actual Human Rights First asylum
case, premiered on Court TV. Chronicling
the journey of an Afghan woman who flees Taliban persecution and the young
pro bono attorney who takes on her asylum case, the movie provides a sobering
depiction of the nearly insurmountable obstacles that
refugees face when they arrive in the U.S.

In Liberty's Shadow
Timed to coincide with the movie’s premiere, the Human Rights First
released a new report, In Liberty’s Shadow: U.S. Detention of
Asylum Seekers in the Age of Homeland Security. In this new era of
homeland security, the absence of essential due process safeguards leaves
asylum seekers at the mercy of routine, and sometimes blanket, detentions
rather than meaningful assessments of individual cases. Caught up in this
web of new laws, regulations and policies, refugees are left more vulnerable
than ever. In Liberty's Shadow documents these and other unfair
U.S. detention practices and calls for the Bush Administration to bring
detention practices into conformance with U.S. tradition and international
human rights law.
